NG Tunnelling recently completed a foul sewer connection in Bedford for a new client — a project that combined shaft sinking, timber heading and night-shift working to deliver a clean result with minimal disruption.

drain connection Bedford

Project Scope

The site presented an immediate challenge in the form of a sloping bank, requiring a carefully planned 3-metre deep shaft excavation before tunnelling could begin. From the base of the shaft, the team drove a 15-metre timber heading to reach the main sewer line — avoiding the need to break the road surface and eliminating the cost and delays associated with road closures and surface reinstatement.

A new 1050mm internal diameter manhole was installed onsite, with all manhole benching carried out on night shifts to minimise the impact on the local road network during peak hours.

Project Summary

  • 3m deep shaft excavation on a sloping bank
  • 15m timber heading
  • Night-shift manhole benching to reduce disruption
  • New 1050mm ID manhole installed onsite

Well done to the onsite team and everyone involved in delivering another successful connection.
