Our team recently completed a combined sewer connection project in Brighton for a new client, delivering a 4.5-metre deep shaft and an 18-metre timber heading with full approval from Southern Water.

Scope of Works

The project required a new connection into the combined sewer network. The full scope included excavation of a 4.5-metre deep shaft, construction of an 18-metre timber heading, installation of a 375mm clay pipe run, and construction of a 1500mm internal diameter manhole.

4.5-Metre Shaft

The 4.5-metre deep shaft was excavated and fully supported to provide safe access for the timber heading and pipe installation works. At this depth, ground conditions and confined space procedures require careful management throughout.

18-Metre Timber Heading

The 18-metre timber heading formed the core of the project. Each section was excavated and progressively supported with timber framing as the heading advanced. Maintaining accurate line and gradient over 18 metres is critical to ensuring proper drainage flow once the pipework is installed.

375mm Clay Pipe Run

A 375mm clay pipe run was installed through the full length of the heading. Vitrified clay offers excellent chemical resistance, structural strength, and a smooth bore that supports long-term flow performance.

1500mm ID Manhole

A 1500mm internal diameter manhole was constructed to adoptable standards, providing the access point needed for future maintenance and inspection of the drainage run.

Air Testing

The completed pipework was air tested to verify the integrity of every joint along the run. The installation passed, confirming that the pipe run is watertight and fit for purpose.

Southern Water Sign-Off

The finished works were inspected and signed off by Southern Water, confirming that the installation met all required standards and was approved for connection into the combined sewer network.
